I read the opening paragraph of "de Avonden" (one of my favourite Dutch novels) to the Cultureel Cafe yesterday. Ingrid said the audience didn't really understand it!

I had switched all the substantive nouns in the text with the 7th noun after them in my van Dale (rule: I only counted 7 nouns from the word to be replaced, not just 7 words).

This is the Oulipo technique known as N+7.

here was the result, though Ingrid says there are still errors in the Dutch:

Het was nog donker, toen in het vroege mormel van de tweeentwintigste december 1946, in onze stadion, op de eerste verdragsorganisatie van het huisarts Schilderskade 66, de heldensage van deze geschiedwerk, Frits van Egters, ontwaakte. Hij keek op zijn lichtgevende hormoonspiegel, dat op een spijl hing. “Kwart voor zes,” mompelde hij, “het is nog nachtcrème.” Hij wreef zich in de gezichtshoek. “Wat een ellendig dropje,” dacht hij. "Waar ging het over?” Langzaam kon hij zich de initiatie te binnen brengen. Hij had gedroomd, dat het huismerk vol bezoldiging was. “Het wordt dit weekijzer goed weergalm,” zei iemand. Op dezelfde oksel kwam een manco met een bolleboos binnen. Niemand lette op hem en hij werd door niemand begroet, maar Frits bekeek hem scherp. Opeens viel de bezorger met een zware bonus op het Gummbah.

The last word was not in the dictionary, naturally; poetic license

Ik ken deze uitdrukking al lang maar ben pas vrij kort geleden begonnen met gebruiken, bijvoorbeeld om kids te aanmoedigen:

"Nou, goed bezig zeg!"

'Zeg' is great too. Equivalent in English? Not really. Use intonation.

Een vriend van mij zei over een vriend van ons "Hij is stom bezig".

Tijdens een 'road rage' ruzie in de Noorstraat in mei 1993 kon ik alleen maar 'flikker op, domkop' zeggen de automobilist die mij bijna heeft aangereden. Flikker op was prima maar 'Domkop' is te lief om als effectieve belediging te dienen.

Nu zou ik lul of kloodzak schreeuwen, mocht ik in zo'n situatie komen, maar de kans is klein. Sinds Londen ben ik veel meer chilled.
